2012 Olympics: Nastia Liukin Should Have Copied Shawn Johnson's Graceful Exit
Nastia Liukin andShawn Johnson have
always been a contrast
in style. Elegance versus
power. Cool restraint
versus twinkle-eyed
pep. Russian roots
versus Heartland
purity. Liukin's way proved
superior in 2008,
yielding the then-18-
year-old an Olympic
all-around title and a
place among the greatest American
gymnasts ever. Four years later, it's
Johnson who has
made out like a
winner. She knew when to
walk away from a
sport that had passed
her by. Liukin didn't,
and it cost her. Last month Shawn
Johnson retired from competitive
gymnastics, ending her attempted comeback
from ACL surgery. This weekend at U.S.
Trials, she embraced
her new role as an
ambassador of the
sport: schmoozing
with reporters, hyping her former training
buddies from Chow's
gym and serving as a
go-to for star-hungry
cameras. Her presence
was undeniable—even in street clothes. A tier below on the
arena floor stood
Liukin—somber,
defiant and so plainly
an outsider among the
gaggle of teen upstarts in her midst. That tableau of past
and present grew
clearer every time
Liukin performed. Day
1 was a struggle
throughout. Liukin, by her own admission, "ran out of steam"
during a ragged
uneven bars routine
and wasn't much
better on beam. Day 2 brought the
exclamation point, a sobering face-plant on uneven bars that drew
gasps from the San
Jose crowd. Liukin finished her set
and the crowd rallied
to her aid, but there
was no erasing the fall.
Among famous final
athletic impressions, it belongs to the same
category of woe
as Brett Favre (bound to the icy turf of a
college stadium) and
Willie Mays (bound to
the fading Mets). And considering the
zeitgeist's appetite for
five-second "fails," you
can bet Liukin's
parting shot will
receive ample replay on America's digital
back-channels. Fair or not, some
people will remember
Liukin by her eight-
foot fall from
grace. Not most, but
some. Now, all this is
hindsight. Liukin could
have transcended age
and expectation á la
Dara Torres in 2008. If
she had, we'd all be dreaming up new
adjectives to extol her
grit, her resilience, her
greatness. But all the tea leaves
from Visa Nationals—
the last major event
before Trials and a
veritable exposé of
Liukin's fading skills— said something like
this was coming.
Maybe not with
such horrific emphasis,
but, then again, not
even the Greeks could have scripted such
tragic poignancy. Many gymnastics fans
will say that the
brilliance of Liukin's
career should
outweigh the fallout of
her ill-conceived comeback attempt. And I agree. But that
doesn't mean the
world will. Brigid McCarthy
captures the recent
surge of sentiment
against Liukin in a piece posted earlier
today on The Couch Gymnast (a must-read
blog for fans of the
sport): Harry How/ Getty Images In the last week I
have been
confounded by all
the comments
that Nastia Liukin
is ‘washed up’ and ‘making a
fool of herself’.
She is what?
Twenty? Are you
people for
real? ‘How dare she keep training?’
these snarky
voices cry.
How dare she try
and train to make
an Olympic team after a period of
indecision about
whether she
wanted to be in
the sport? What
was she even thinking? As you might imagine,
McCarthy goes on to
defend Liukin's choice,
but she paints a pretty
ugly picture in the
process. Some people won't
forgive Liukin for her
failures. Others didn't
know her well enough
to remember anything
else. Liukin can take heart
in the fact that she
tried. And if the old
adage about trying
and failing holds true,
then maybe Liukin made the right choice. But it was hard not to
draw a straight line
back to her old
foil, Shawn Johnson—
seated in the same
arena, surrounded by adoring fans, bearing a
confident grin as she
turned toward the
second phase of her
life's journey. The contrast between
the two was as clear as
ever. One smiling—the other
despondent. One healing—the
other broken One looking forward
with clear mind—the
other looking back,
wondering what went
wrong.
WIEBER'S OLYMPIC DREAMS COME TO END
LONDON Shortly after failing to qualifyfor the individual all-around
finals, the face of USA
Gymnastics walked unsteadily
past the media. Jordyn Wieber walked with wide eyes, steered by a handler,
past her teammates, including
the two who had replaced her
in an event she was expected
to dominate. Even then the
tears would not stop. Aly Raisman , who came from nowhere to vault ahead
of her teammate with a
qualifying score of 60.391 to
best Wieber’s 60.032 and claim
her spot, looked almost as
upset: “It’s hard, because it’s something that you dream of
your whole life and it’s
difficult. I feel really bad. And
it’s hard. I don’t even know
what to say.” Gabrielle Douglas, ebullient
with her own 60.265 score
that will also see her to
Thursday’s all-around finals,
wavered between her own
pride and a knowing sadness for what Wieber had lost.
“It’s definitely a little
awkward.” Wieber, the reigning world
champion, kept moving,
guided by those hands, as if
she only knew what to do if
someone else told her. She
moved as if she saw nothing, her tear-streaked eyes wide,
her face a blank – as if
everything that had been lost
in failing to meet the
enormous expectations of her
talent had taken with it everything else. She stopped, finally, in that
same nightmarish daze. The
woman guiding her turned
for a moment, looking for
instruction, and when her
hands left Wieber’s shoulders, Wieber’s balance looked
shaky. She breathed in. Let
out a long sigh. Breathed in
again, sighed again. Still the
tears followed. She might
have been, in that moment, the loneliest person I’ve ever
laid eyes on. This is what broken dreams
look like, up close and
personal, carried in every
heaving breath and brutal tear
of a 17-year-old whose world
has just come crashing down around her. Wieber, pushed inexorably by
NBC and USA Gymnastics as
the face of the U.S. women’s
gymnastics team, instead had
transformed herself into a
touchstone to the other, darker side of the Olympics:
The fact that for every miracle
there is a dream that dies, for
every upset that changes one
life there is a failure that will
haunt another. So much is lost here. While the
American women advance
two stellar competitors into
the all-around finals, and
while the team still has the
mettle and talent to take gold in Tuesday’s team finals, a
young girl hoisted forward as
one of her country’s great
hopes for the games has
failed. She was the stunning
talent who would be the next gymnastics “It Girl” of these
London games, the next
Shawn Johnson or Nastia
Liukin or Mary Lou Retton, a
person whose entire life was
built toward that all-around individual gold – whose entire
life after that would be
pushed forward by that one
medal, that one shining
moment. All of that is gone. “I’m basically devastated for
her,” said her coach, John
Geddert. “She has trained her
entire life for this day and to
have it turn out anything less
than she deserves is going to be devastating. She has
waited her entire career for
this.” It took four events and just a
few slips up to bring her to
that devastation. She began
with a beautiful vault. She
was solid – just fine – on the
bars. But after a wobbly beam performance, and a 14.7 score
that changed everything,
there was suddenly one event
to go. Her own teammate, the
solid and reliable Raisman,
was coming up behind her. A threat had emerged no one
knew existed. Raisman was a floor specialist
with the floor event the only
one remaining, three-tenths of
a point behind her friend and
suddenly very much in the
hunt. Wieber went first, slipped out of bounds, and in
that moment everything had
changed. That shift, a life
changing of course against all
thought and planning belief,
had turned one girl’s fate in favor of another’s. Raisman
went next, was outstanding,
and when she lifted her hands
to end her routine she was
going to the all-around
instead. “I’m definitely worried (for
her),” said national team
coordinator Marta Karolyi.
“You try to find words, what
you can say.” Only there are no words. A
dream was over for an athlete
who had worked an entire
life to achieve it and then, like
a wisp of smoke, as if some
nefarious breeze had blown it away. There were no words. Wieber
herself, having worked her
way through a required NBC
interview, felt those hands on
her shoulders again, and again
they were on the move, the 17-year-old still crying, being
steered away, disappearing
behind a door and vanishing

Sherman Hemsley Dies at 74
Sherman Hemsley, whoplayed George Jefferson on
The Jeffersons, has died at 74,
according to police. The actor, who first played
the role of Jefferson in All in
the Family, also played Deacon
Ernest Frye on TV's Amen. Hemsley died at his home in El
Paso, Texas, police say. Born in South Philadelphia,
Hemsley dropped out of high
school to join the Air Force. He
returned to Philadelphia and
worked for the U.S. Postal
Service, while taking acting classes at night. After performing with local
groups in Philadelphia,
Hemsley moved to New York
to make his Broadway debut
as Gitlow in Purlie. While touring with the
production, television writer
and producer Norman Lear
contacted Hemsley to play the
role of Jefferson on his new
sitcom, All in the Family. Hemsley hesitated to accept
but Lear held the role open for
him and two years later,
Hemsley joined the cast. Less than two years after
Hemsley made his television
debut, he and All in the Family
costar Isabel Sanford were
given their own spin-off in
The Jeffersons. The series earned Hemsley Emmy and
Golden Globe nominations in
1984 and 1985 respectively. Sanford died in 2004 at age 86. In 1986, Hemsley was cast as
Deacon Ernest Frye in the NBC
series, Amen. The role would
last five seasons, ending in
1991. He was also a professional
singer and released a single on
Sutra Record called "Ain't That
a Kick in the Head" in 1989. In
1992, he released Dance, an
R&B album. Although he retired from
television acting, Hemsley
joined Sanford through the
late '90s and early 2000's to
reprise their roles as George
and Louise "Weezy" Jefferson on guest spots. The duo
appeared on The Fresh Prince
of Bel-Air and in commercials
for Old Navy, Gap and
Denny's. Hemsley had no wife or

Sally Ride, first U.S. woman in space, dies at 61
(Reuters) - Sally Ride, thefirst U.S. woman to travel
into space and an advocate
for science education, died
on Monday after a 17-
month battle with pancreatic cancer,
according to her
organization, Sally Ride
Science. She was 61. Ride broke new ground
for American women in
1983 when at the age of
32 she and four male
crewmates blasted off
aboard space shuttle Challenger. "The fact that I was going
to be the first American
woman to go into space
carried huge expectations
along with it," Ride recalled
in a 2008 interview on the 25th anniversary of her
flight. "I didn't really think about
it that much at the time --
but I came to appreciate
what an honor it was to be
selected," she said. U.S. President Barack
Obama called Ride "a
national hero and a
powerful role model." In a
statement, he said Ride
"inspired generations of young girls to reach for the
stars." Ride was not the first
woman in space. That
distinction fell to the Soviet
Union's Valentina
Tereshkova, who blasted
off aboard a Vostok 6 rocket on June 16, 1963. But over the years only
two other Russian women
followed Tereshkova into
orbit. By the time Ride returned
for a second flight in 1984,
not only had another
female astronaut, Judith
Resnik, flown on the
shuttle, but Ride had a female crewmate, Kathryn
Sullivan. Since then, more than 45
women from the United
States and other countries
have flown in space,
including two as shuttle
commander. "Sally Ride broke barriers
with grace and
professionalism - and
literally changed the face of
America's space program,"
NASA administrator Charles Bolden, a former
astronaut, said in a
statement. Ride grew up in Los
Angeles and attended
Stanford University, where
she earned bachelor's
degrees in physics and
English and master's and doctorate degrees in
physics. She joined NASA's
astronaut corps in 1978. She was assigned to a third
shuttle flight, but training
for the mission was cut off
after the fatal 1986
Challenger accident that
claimed the lives of six colleagues and a
schoolteacher. Ride served as a member of
the presidential commission
that investigated the
accident, and then assisted
the agency's chief with
long-range and strategic planning. She left NASA in 1987 and
joined a Stanford
University security
research institute. In 1989,
she joined the physics
department at the University of California-San
Diego and directed the
California Space Institute. Ride's interest in education
extended to younger
students, whom she
targeted with her science
education startup Sally
Ride Science in San Diego. The company creates
science programs and
publications for elementary
and middle school students
and educators. Ride also authored five
science books for children
and served on dozens of
NASA, space and
technology advisory
panels, including the board that investigated the
second fatal space shuttle
accident in 2003. Ride is survived by her
mother; her partner, Tam
O'Shaughnessy; a sister; a
niece and a nephew.
